OK, so some of you may have visited this link from my right-hand column already, but if you haven't, you need to experience this immediately. This web phenomenon started this summer as 3 separately-released acts, and all I can say is that I'm glad I came across them late so that I didn't have to wait to see them all together. Andrew and I have watched this a number of times, and it just doesn't get old. We also have the songs on our iPods and know almost all the words.
I'm speaking, of course, about Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Joss Whedon thought this up, along with his brothers, during the writer's strike. He got Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion, and Felicia Day on board, and there was no turning back.
I don't even know how to explain the brilliance. It's the writing, the songs, the acting, and the way it can laugh at itself but still pull you in to the story. And the fact that I have a schoolgirl crush on Nathan Fillion doesn't hurt either. But the whole cast shines, and I have to say that Neil Patrick Harris is completely endearing.
Their twitter account sums up the story as "The story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to. "
I'm going to stop talking about it because you need to go watch it. Now. If you're hesitant, give it the first 5 minutes. But really, the last song in the first act is where you get to see the true brilliance unfold. Trust me on this.
By the way, they are working on a DVD release and are running a contest for Evil League of Evil villians. There are a number of applicants on YouTube already. "Sneak Attack" is my top-runner at the moment (although I haven't looked at that many of them). Alright, go already! But report back. I'm curious to see if you're all as entranced with this as I am.
